"Spring" into fitness?

I'll be honest, when I look at all of the running seasons I have been blessed to be a part of, this season is one of it's own.  With snow in the forecast and still piled on the ground, the middle April, I have to say my motivation for getting out the door isn't the best that it could be.  Normally, my motivation is sparked by the growth that happens in the spring time.  Witnessing all of the buds on the trees make their entrance, watching blades of grass poke their way through the ground after a cold winter, listening to water running, and birds chirping.  I enjoy running on pavement and look forward to the times when slush isn't an issue.  All of these things combined ,get me out the door.  I enjoy being surrounded with the changes.  The new growth of spring.  Yes, winter has it's moments and I embrace those moments, however when March rolls around I am ready for a change. 

I'm not going to lie, running has been a challenge this year.  I refuse to run on a treadmill, I despise it.  Therefore running outside is really my only option.  I have ran in all types of conditions, rain, sleet, snow, hail (one time) thunder, lightening, wind storms... I've seen it all.  I am just sick of winter!  I can imagine I'm not alone in this?

I decided that I need to push myself, I need to get out there, regardless of the weather.  Energy seems to be non-existent some days?   I know this is due to the lack of sun.  I'm tempted to bake myself in a tanning booth just to get some "rays" but I just can't submit my poor skin to such a thing.  I will have to be patient. 

Today, I decided to chow down an Access Bar, which is basically an energy bar for running.  If I eat it, I have to run, (so my mind tells me so).  So that's what I did, to get myself out the door.  Trust me, looking at the snow coming down, and the wind pushing the trees around, the last thing I wanted to do was to go outside.

I pushed out 3 miles and it felt great.  I find it funny that running 3 miles actually gives you more energy, you'd think it would be the opposite? 



With the Boston Marathon Bombings just a few days ago... I felt different running today.  I had all of the families and runners on my mind.  I can't help but think about Grandmas and what if that happened to me?  What if I was near the finish line and terror came into play?  It saddens me deeply that our country, our world has such evil in it.  This gives me more motivation to continue to run, to continue to pray, and to embrace each day and to make a difference!

Crossing the Country


Yesterday my friend Jen and I went XC skiing at the Blackwater Environmental Area Trails in Cohasset,MN.  The trails are nestled in the pines located by the river, with an energy plant in the near distance.  We didn't know exactly where these trails were located, which made for a little "adventure." Finally we see open water, which Jen thought was "kinda scary" in the middle of winter.  We pulled in and started bundling up before making our exit from the warm vehicle.  Three deer made their appearance to the east, I watched as they walked ever so quietly into the woods in which we were going to be skiing. 

Jen and I are both new at this whole Cross Country skiing thing, which makes us both very contented to be around one another.  The fact that we're not all that steady or gracious by any stretch of the imagination, is quite humorous to say the least!  Jen and I made our way down the snow covered pined trails.  The snow was was blowing off of the trees, which made it feel like it was actually snowing.  With the sun shining, it truly felt like a winter wonderland.  With the temperature well below zero, we ended up taking off our gloves due to working up a "sweat."  We were getting a workout, that's for sure!

We ended our adventure with some hot tea, sweetened with pure raw honey and cinnamon.  A perfect way to end our skiing adventure.

These "cross trains" are so important when training for a race.  Using your muscles in a different way, getting out and enjoying something other then running is something to think about incorperating into your schedule.  In the summer months I often find myself going for bike rides, walking, or taking an occasional swim. 

I am really looking forward to some warmer temps.  My hubby, Ruby and I are going to Nevada later this month, I am looking forward to running without a face mask!

One Foot in Front of the Other

This afternoon Wenzyl and I pumped out a 3 mile run.  The temp was a beautiful 28 degrees, and it was slightly overcast.  I enjoyed listening to the snow crunch beneath my shoes and the loud noise they would make whenever I hit pavement due to the sheet metal screws on my soles.  This little "trick" (Thank you Daleri) is a great way to give yourself some traction during the winter months!

As I was running I was thinking about who was going to join me this year and "Run With Reason".  I thought to myself, how can I get people to start running who have never ran before. How can I encourage those that aren't "runners" to commit to start such a "task".  How can I motivate others to make this amazing change in their life, to give them the courage and the motivation to sign up for either a 5k, 10k, half or full marathon, and to raise money for a good cause?  Then I came up with an idea.  I realized that I can't do this on my own.  I need help, I need other runners to tell their story, to give hope to new runners, and to show their support!  We all have a story of what it was like when we first started running.  None of us, just woke up one day and ran a 5k with ease, or a half or full marathon.  It took a lot of hard work and determination.   My story is actually located on this blog, (under Running With Reason).  I want people to know that ANYONE can run, anyone can cross a finish line.  It's a personal goal that shouldn't be compared to anyone else.  You can do it! 

I get this comment way too often, "I can't run, I would NEVER be able to keep up with you" or  "I would fall over, I can't even run to my mailbox."  I understand that are certain things that may keep someone from running; asthma, joint issues, etc.  Although I do know runners that suffer with these things, and they STILL get out there and put one foot in front of the other.   Basically what it comes down to is, a choice.  The choice to dedicate yourself to a running program.  The choice to have faith in yourself!

Often times people label me as "crazy".  "How could you possibly enjoy running 13.1 or 26.2 miles??"  "I would rather die!"  It's hard to explain what it's like to accomplish such an amazing thing, it's hard to get someone to realize how wonderful you really do feel after doing something like a marathon.  Just to give you an idea.  My first full marathon, at mile 22, I broke down crying.  NO, it wasn't because I was in pain or the fact that I couldn't feel my legs anymore, it was because I was full of JOY!  I had come this far, ME, and only me!  I pushed myself and I am almost to the finish line!  I kept thanking God and praying for strength as I neared the end.  Once I crossed the finish line, again, I broke down in tears, tears of joy!  I looked back on all the hard work that I put in over the past few months, all of the hours of training, the amazing friendships that have been built, the memories, the laughs, the pains, the chiropractor appointments.  All of these things overwhelmed me and I just broke down.  Then after all of these feelings, the "runners high" made its entrance.  The infamous "runners high", yes it's true, it exists and I believe (as well as Miss Tara Hallie believes) it should be illegal!  Thank goodness it's not!  I could go on and on about how amazing I believe running is... that's where I need your help!

Wellness Promotion



This year, as many of you know... I have decided to "Run With Reason" for cancer patients and families within our community, that are in need of financial support.  My hope is to build a team of people that can make a difference, not only with themselves, but in the lives of others.  This is how it's going to work: 


I am doing this on behalf of  "A Healthy Communities Partnership" through Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital.  They have launched a 3 year wellness initiative called, "Lead by example".  This program is being offered to all Grand Itasca employees, spouses and significant others.  The goal is to encourage our community to eat right, move more and live well. 

The residents of Itasca County should feel honored that our area was selected for this program!  "Allina and the George Family Foundation is a private grant-making organization with an emphasis on leveraged, strategic funding."  "The foundation funds innovative ideas in integrative health, education, leadership development, social justice and spirituality in every day life." 


If you join my team, you will be able to take advantage of this partnership!  This partnership will include free baseline screenings (Blood work) that will allow each participant to know their "health score.  Participants in the program can use an online tool called "Family Health Manager" (that provides goal setting, recommendations, and local resources.)  A Wellness Care Guide will work with each participant on a health improvement plan combining medical and non medical approaches.  Participants will also be screened each year!  This is not a mandatory part of joining the team, it's just an added bonus that is available if you so choose to take advantage of it.  Knowing what your labs (cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI, etc) say about your body, is extremely important in order for you to implement healthy choices into your life.  Seeing these numbers on paper will assist with motivation!

The fundraising opportunity that we will be utilizing for "Running with Reason" is called Cards for a Cause.  This fundraiser is offered through Usborne Books and More.  There are two Boxes of 30 handcrafted greeting cards that are sold for $30 per box, which is $1 per card.  Each box sold earns $13 from UBAM.  There is no maximum earning potential!   This is a unique program with value- for- money greetings cards and a high return to the organization raising funds.

Example: With 20 participants, if each sold 20 boxes that would be $5,200 raised!  Walkers and Runners can also ask for monetary donations as a way of fundraising as well.

You choose a race that fits your goals.  Whether that be walking or running a 5k, running a 10k, half marathon or full marathon.  This race can be any race that you choose.  The reason I decided to do this, was I found it too difficult to organize everyone into the same race, especially with many coworkers joining the team.  Not everyone can take vacation on the same day.  This way, it will open up more possibilities and lesson any schedule conflicts and the chance of not getting chosen due to a lottery.  We will all be "Running" for the same "Reason" and that is what matters!  Personally, I am going to try to get into Grandmas Half Marathon, (Gary Bjorkland Half Marathon)  There are many other races out there... one site you may want to check out is

Let the Journey Begin!

It's that time of the year, when I start dreaming about paved roadways and the buds of trees making their entrance after a long cold winter.  With the temperature sitting at a frigid sixteen below, my daydreaming is only cut short, as I let my dogs out for a quick "potty break".  Today I spend my time warm inside my home, sipping on Coconut flavored coffee, and being thankful for my fuzzy clog slippers my hubby just bought for me.   I'm gearing up for my first "Running With Reason" meeting tonight with the Grand Itasca Foundation.  I can't tell you how excited I am that I have their support!

This year, I am going to "Run with Reason" and raise money for cancer patients and families within our community, that are in need of financial support. I am so excited to build a team of people to assist me in this endeavor.  Crossing a finish line after sweating out miles upon miles, in itself is amazing.  Crossing the finish line after sweating out miles upon miles for a cause... is nothing short of a blessing! 

My hope is to motivate those that are searching for a way to change their lifestyle, to get in shape, to become a better you, to push yourself, and to build new relationships.  Through running I truly believe lives can be changed.  Not only the life of the runner, but when we "Run with Reason" we help others along the way as well!  That's what it's all about right?
